The recession has led many of us into somewhat of a social rut. You can’t go out for as many drinks as you used to and the term haute cuisine now requires translation. However, there are ways to kick back, have a good time and save money while you’re at it. As most people are feeling the pinch, the SaveAFewBob team decided to compile a list of cheap and cheerful entertainment alternatives…
Comedy clubs
Up for a laugh? Whether you’re on a romantic date or a group gathering, a comedy club provides an ideal night out. Admission fees are generally reasonable, ranging from €5 to €15. The majority of comedy clubs also offer student rates. Ireland boasts some fantastic comedy venues including City Limits Comedy Club in Cork, Cuba in Galway, Laughter Lounge in Belfast and the International Comedy Club in Dublin.
The Galway Comedy Festival is taking place from the 21st to the 26th of October. Ticket prices range from €10 to €25, depending on the act. Among the big names set to perform are Des Bishop, Neil Delamere and Jason Byrne. Check out the potential giggles below…
The Cinema
For many, the cinema acts as antidote for a night out on the tiles. It doesn’t leave your wallet weeping and you usually feel ok the morning after. At Cineworld, adults can expect to pay €10.40 for their cinematic experience. Students get off marginally lighter at €8.30. Omniplex cinemas offer slightly more competitive rates. An adult evening ticket will cost you €9. However, if you book online all Omniplex cinema tickets are priced at €6 until the 23rd of October.

If you’re interested in delving into less commercial cinematic territory, the Irish Film Institute in Temple Bar showcases the best of independent film. From the 3rd to the 18th of October, the IFI are celebrating the work of Alfred Hitchcock. The season opens this Saturday with screenings of Under Capricorn and Juno and the Paycock. An evening show will set you back €9.20. If you are a regular cinema-goer, IFI membership may be a worthy investment as it will save you money in the long run.
Concerts
The rising price of concert tickets has aggravated the SaveAFewBob team for some time. However, it is still possible to enjoy live music without the extortionate price tag. Explore beyond your musical borders to experience electric live performances. Your local newspaper should provide listings of recitals, choirs, song clubs, open mic nights, trad sessions and school productions taking place in your area.
Do you need a little Zen in your life? A free meditation concert is taking place in Dublin on Friday the 2nd of October at 8pm. The event will feature the compositions of meditation master, Sri Chinmoy. If you don’t feel like cleansing your aura why not check out the Dublin Theatre Festival? The festival, sponsored by Ulster Bank, runs until the 11th of October. With 26 shows taking place in 16 venues all across Dublin, you are sure to find something to sate your social appetite!
