Walking
Assuming you do this all the time anyway, now is the time to do more, in more interesting places, and for longer. Decent footwear and the drive to get you out of a sitting position are all that’s needed. If you’re out of shape, start with short strolls and work your way up to long, healthy, fat-burning strides. Go exploring your neighbourhood and your thoughts, and exchange knowing smiles with your fellow walkers.
Sli na Slainte
“Sli na Slainte”, meaning “Path to Health” is a series of pre-planned walking routes around the country marked at kilometre intervals by colourful signposts – great encouragement for those who like to track their progress. For routes in your area check out www.irishheart.ie/sli
Cycling
Bicycle? Check. Helmet? Check. And you’re off.
Most people either already have a bicycle or know someone who is only too happy to lend or offload an old one. Burning up a whopping 300 calories in just half an hour, cycling is one of the most liberating, enjoyable, low-impact exercises out there. Just make sure your bike is in good shape and you keep your wits about you. There are few more satisfying ways to start your day than sailing through a traffic jam…
Dancing
“Dance like nobody’s watching”
Arguably the most enjoyable form of exercise, dancing is as natural as walking. Whether you like to lock your doors and cut loose at home or partner up in a salsa class, there are few activities to match dancing for pure, serotonin-releasing fun.
Aerobics
For the slightly fitter among us, aerobics is a tried and tested workout involving stretching and warm up, dancing to really get your heart pumping and then winding down with muscle-stretching and cooling exercises. From church halls to gyms, classes are widely available – make sure you shop around for the best deal!
Swimming
This one involves slightly more effort in our unpredictable climate but the reward is absolutely worth it. Swimming is suitable for pretty much everyone, is great for toning and burning energy and unless you install your own pool it’s an inexpensive way to get in shape. If lane swimming doesn’t appeal, why not try water aerobics? A fitness instructor will take you through a series of exercises; knowing how to swim optional.
Stretching
Stretch-based exercises such as Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates have enjoyed a huge surge in popularity in recent years, and with good reason. The emphasis is on slow, controlled movements and breathing, balancing and realigning your body and mind. Get in touch with the inner while toning the outer you.
There’s no time like the present to take the first steps to a happier, healthier and fitter you – Just do it!
