Get fit for summer: diet tips

If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, you’ll know that there are a plethora of diet books out there, all of which claim that they can have you a svelte Adonis or goddess in no time.

While many of these books will help you lose weight in the short term, they are often based on faddish diet plans that are unsustainable in the long run (there’s only so much cabbage soup that a body can take).

So at SaveAFewBob, we’re not going to tell you that we can have you two stone lighter within a week, but we do have a couple of commonsense tips that can help you shift those excess inches without spending a fortune on eccentric diet plans.

Taper your calories

Go for a wrap rather than a roll: less flour means less carbs

…which is a fancy way of saying “breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper”. Your blood sugar is low when you get up in the morning, so start the day on the rights foot with a healthy breakfast - porridge with banana and dried cranberries and raisins, yummers. If you eat a proper breakfast, you are less likely to cave in and get a pastry with your morning coffee.

At lunchtime, eat a wrap or a bap rather than a baguette. And leave out the cheese and the creamy dressing - those two items will really push up the fat content.

There’s little point in eating a big meal in the evening after you’ve consumed most of the calories you’re going to burn that day (unless you’re working out that evening).

Drink lots of water

Often when you think that you are hungry, it’s actually that your body needs water. So keep yourself hydrated. It’s a good idea to have a bottle of water at your desk to sip throughout the day, and have a big drink of water with each meal - you’ll feel full more quickly that way, and won’t have to eat as much.

Cut down on salt

Everyone should try to reduce the amount of salt in their diet. Most people get their daily requirement of sodium (and then some) from the salt already present in the food that we eat. Too much salt in your diet can cause high blood pressure, so it’s not a bad idea to try and get out of the habit of adding salt to your food. And in terms of looking good, excess salt causes water retention. So even if you achieve a lean, svelte physique, you’ll still look bloated around the middle if you’ve eaten too much salt.

Following these tips might not make you a waif overnight, but they are just a couple of the cost-effective, commonsense ways to help you drop a pound or two.
