Beauty on a budget

homemade-face-masksI’m sure everyone is familiar with Cyclopentasiloxane. No? How about Isopropyl Palmitate?

Apart from the obvious space issue, there’s a reason why the ingredients in your daily moisturiser are lurking on the back. If you’re looking for products with more recognisable, easy to spell ingredients then look no further than your own kitchen.

Long before lotions and potions were concocted in labs, people looked to nature for their beauty needs. Lemons to rid your skin of those nasty dead cells, strawberries and cream for a luscious face mask and cucumber slices for the bleary-eyed. Olive oil is a centuries-old beauty booster and can be used for everything from gnarly nails to hair conditioner and every parched piece of you in between.

While you will find countless recipes online, don’t be afraid to experiment and throw together any ingredients you like to make your own. Just remember, if you’re using fresh ingredients, do a little at a time – a black banana facial loses some of its appeal. If you’re going down the fruit and veg route, save a few bob and buy what’s in season.

Unfortunately, all the lemons in the world won’t get rid of unwanted hair. Although shaving, plucking and waxing can all be done at home with varying degrees of pain, it might be worth looking at laser hair removal to keep yourself permanently fuzz-free. Many laser clinics have invested huge sums in very fancy equipment that needs to be paid for and are offering great deals at the moment. Keep an eye on the media for details and always read the small print!

Taking care of your skin is no longer just the domain of the fairer sex. Men, you have kitchens and supermarkets; maybe it’s time to say goodbye to that back hair. Nobody needs to know about your fantastic raspberry face peel; you can keep acting tough, but at least you’ll feel soft.
