A night out without breaking the bank…

a-night-out-without-breaking-the-bank

While many businesses are lowering their prices in a nod to these straitened times, Ireland’s vintners have yet to jump on the bandwagon, and a night in the pub can relieve you of your hard-earned cash like nowhere else. Time then to cast the net a bit wider when looking for entertaining ways to spend an evening. The pub will always be there.

The Cinema

Still just on the right side of €10 admission. Unless spending another ten on goodies is all part of the experience for you, stock up before you get there and never feel that drinking your body weight in Coke is mandatory.

Comedy Clubs

With prices from a mere €8, most comedy clubs will have a selection of comedians on any given night. You’re pretty much guaranteed lots of laughs and a few toe-scrunching moments.

Music

Big name prices aside, there’s something for everyone playing near you this week. Take your chances and check out some new talent – claim your own “I saw U2 playing in the Dandelion” moment. For the more classically inclined, a visit to the National Concert hall is always very pleasant, and you’ll feel more cultured just standing in the foyer. See www.nch.ie for listings.

Book Readings

Usually free and held early evening in bookstores, book readings are a great combination of culture and sociability. Most stores will offer a complimentary glass of wine but treating it like a free bar and talking through the reading is definitely frowned upon.

The theatreTheatre

From local amateur productions to Chekhov at The Abbey, it’s not for everyone but still loved by many. Try a preview performance for cheaper tickets or apply for concession tickets if you’re eligible.

Often no more than a thinly-veiled wine and gossip club, there are still some out there where people actually read and discuss books. Join one locally or start your own.

Walking Tours

Keeping with the literary theme, Dublin’s Literary Pub Crawl is exactly what it sounds like and a great way to see the city through the eyes of a tourist. For details go to www.dublinpubcrawl.com
